Behind the Scenes of My DTIYS Drawing
Now, let me tell you—this drawing was not one of those smooth, one-shot successes. It was full of trials and errors, erasing, redrawing, and even battling the ever-present enemy of procrastination.
At first, I sat down excited, thinking I’d get it right on the first try. Of course, that didn’t happen. Lines went wrong, proportions felt off, and I found myself constantly reaching for the eraser. Sometimes I’d erase so much that the page itself started to look tired before I even made progress. That’s part of the journey though, isn’t it? Drawing isn’t always about a straight path from point A to B—it’s about stumbling around until you find the lines that feel right.
There were moments when I pushed the paper aside, convincing myself I’d “come back later.” But we all know what “later” really means—it’s procrastination wearing a friendly mask. The hardest part was pulling myself back, reminding myself why I started in the first place: because I love creating.
And slowly, with a lot of redrawing, I saw the piece take shape. That’s always the most rewarding part—the messy middle gives way to something you can finally recognize, and suddenly all those erased lines and frustrated sighs feel worth it.
It all begins on paper. I usually like to sketch out my first ideas with a pencil, just to get the pose and overall feeling down. It’s very rough (lots of erasing and redrawing here), but I enjoy starting traditionally before moving everything to Procreate, where I can refine the details.
So here it is—my finished drawing, side by side with the original piece from the DTIYS challenge. I hope you enjoy seeing both, and maybe these behind-the-scenes snapshots will remind you that every piece of art has its hidden story of trial, error, and persistence.
At the end of the post you will find a process video of the drawing.
Lots of love,
Despina
